What Is Highly Branched Cyclic Dextrin?

A type of high-molecular-weight maltodextrin, Cyclic Dextrin, also known as Highly Branched Cluster Dextrin (HBCD). Cornstarch is treated with a branching enzyme to produce dextrins. By cyclization [R], the branching enzyme degrades the joint of the cluster structure of amylopectin. HBCD is used for sports performance, improving taste masking, and making spray drying easier.

Like other carbohydrate supplements like maltodextrin and dextrose, Cluster Dextrin is designed to provide fast-acting energy for prolonged exercise. However, instead of supplementing with whole-natural foods derived from complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, yams, and oats, why would you take a carbohydrate supplement that only contains sugar? Let's look at this in context.

The cyclic dextrin allows you to increase carbohydrate consumption without eating starchy carbs, which may lead to a bloated and sluggish feeling. This allows endurance and CrossFit athletes to be adequately fueled and replenish glycogen stores without feeling bloated.
