Vitamins are essential for life. We need to either consume them in our diet or supplement our diets with vitamins. At ATP Science, we would prefer the world to eat incredibly healthy. Unfortunately, this is nearly impossible as we all eat some processed foods. We also suffer excessive stress in our lives or take drugs that increase the requirements of certain nutrients. We also have unique genes, and some of us merely require more of a particular nutrient or nutrients.
Thus, it is safer to ensure we all take a food based, natural supplement with naturally occurring/non-synthetic vitamins to ensure we are getting optimal amounts of nutrients. Multifood is just that. Vitamin A is an “essential” nutrient, meaning our bodies cannot make it, and it must be included in our diet. It is fat soluble and stored in our liver bound to protein until it is needed and transported out to the site of deficiency or increased demand.
Provitamin A is found in foods as carotenoids and is converted in part into retinol. Beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin are the most common carotenoids, with beta-carotene being the most easily converted into retinol. Carotenoids are found naturally in many fruits and vegetables.
Lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin are carotenoids but are not converted into vitamin A. They have their own functions, and are also essential cofactors to regulate its function.
Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is found in some plants, and Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the one synthesized in the body from cholesterol by irradiation of sterols in the skin by UV rays.
Every second person is vitamin D deficient. Almost 50% of the population worldwide; An estimated 1 billion people worldwide, across all ethnicities and age groups, have a diagnosed vitamin D deficiency. This may be attributed to lifestyle (for example, reduced outdoor activities, sunscreen) and environmental (for example, air pollution, atmospheric changes, and filtered sunlight) factors that minimize exposure to sunlight, which is required for ultraviolet-B (UVB)-induced vitamin D production in the skin.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin utilized in cellular antioxidant defence systems. As we cannot synthesize Vitamin E within our body, it must be exclusively obtained from our diet. It is often found in foods such as nuts and seeds and given that there are a lot of people on a restricted diet, some people may not be eating enough healthy fats, such as the ones found in nuts and seeds. Also, many individuals suffer from nut allergies, which excludes this food source from many individuals diet. This may contribute to a Vitamin E deficiency.
Natural B Vitamins
Most people have heard of B Vitamins. The term “B complex” vitamins refer to the group of water-soluble B vitamins (e.g. B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9 …) that work synergistically and should be supplemented and consumed with the full group balance and synergy in mind.
For example, Vitamin B6 is critical for the function of more than 100 enzymes in the body and also has roles in cellular and amino acid metabolism, cognitive function, and in the immune system. It can help to reduce homocysteine.
Homocysteine is a waste product that can contribute to heart disease, brain damage and kidney disease. But is used as an example here to show the synergy required with B complex vitamins.
Folate is also involved with amino acid metabolism and in the synthesis of DNA and RNA and drives methylation to reduce homocysteine levels along with vitamin B12. The enzyme they use requires vitamin B2 to function, so if B2 is deficient the other B vitamins can’t work. Then if excessive vitamin B3 is supplemented out of balance it can deplete the methylation and have an opposite effect elevating homocysteine. Unnatural and deficient levels of any of these vitamins can result in elevated homocysteine.
Thiamine, also referred to as Vitamin B1 or aneurin, is an essential micronutrient. Without it we will die e.g. Beri Beri is the most famous B1 deficiency disease in the past but these days Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (thiamine deficiency disease induced by alcoholism) is more common. But thiamine deficiency is the cause of morbidity and mortality.
Ascorbic acid (AA), also known as vitamin C, is a small carbohydrate molecule first identified in the 1920s. Ascorbic acid deficiency is known as scurvy and usually suffered by people who do not consume enough fruit or vegetables for long periods of time. Natural sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, strawberries, papaya, broccoli, (probably the foods we often don’t eat enough off). Vitamin C is essential for the biosynthesis of collagen and is a co-factor in the biosynthesis of catecholamines (brain energy chemicals), L-carnitine, cholesterol, amino acids, and some peptide hormones.
Why did we remove the magnesium and calcium?
The dose of magnesium and calcium in the Multifood was just enough to aid the utilization of the other ingredients when in a deficiency state and the very low % of magnesium and calcium per gram of plant matter took up too much space and was not efficient nor viable.
Magnesium and calcium are better supplemented in higher doses when deficient and then lower doses once the deficiency has been corrected.
ZMST contains 100mg of Magnesium per capsule as magnesium citrate which is the best form of magnesium to supplement with in most cases to be taken at doses of 1 to 6 capsules daily. Multifood could only fit 20mg of magnesium from plant per capsule which has much lower bioavailability due to the phytates contained in the plant material. You would need to take 3 to 18 capsules of Multifood to correct magnesium deficiency states and that means overdosing on the vitamins.
