CLA is most often touted as being a potent fat-loss agent, known in particular for reducing bodyfat in the belly region. It also has great muscle-building properties, but it can take 2-3 months for these effects to be seen.
The majority of studies into CLA have been too short to measure the effects on muscle-gain, but a study in 2008 by the University of Saskatchewan showed that those subjects that supplemented with CLA while participating in a weight-lifting program experienced significant gains in their bench-press strength, and also gained three pounds of muscle mass while dropping two pounds of bodyfat. The placebo group made negligible gains in strength and actually gained a pound of bodyfat.
